Excessive alcohol consumption over a long period of time can cause serious harm to a person, placing them at risk of physical health problems which affect the liver, brain and pancreas and increase the risk of high blood pressure, cancer and heart disease. Life is shortened considerably by alcohol dependence which remains unresolved for a long period of time. As well as these physical risks, excessive drinking can contribute to domestic abuse, violent behaviour, increased risk of problems with the law, time off work and the breaking down of relationships with a partner, family and friends. Unfortunately, once a person has become physically dependent on alcohol, it can be dangerous for that person to simply stop drinking due to the extreme withdrawal symptoms which can occur. From minor shaking and anxiety in the least serious cases to Delirium Tremens (DTs) which can lead to seizures and even death, in the most serious cases. It is therefore crucial that no person who is physically dependent on alcohol dependent attempts to stop drinking without medical help. This help is called alcohol detoxification or, more commonly, alcohol detox. Alcohol detox is carried out by giving medication which counteracts the alcohol wihdrawal symptoms making it safe and even comfortable to stop drinking. The doses are high in the first few days, reducing over a period of 7 to 10 days at which point the body`s need for alcohol will have been eliminated. Craving for alcohol is likely to continue, however. I am an independent alcohol practitioner, a qualified nurse and can carry out detox in a client`s own home anywhere in the UK. This involves the full assessment, the prescription for the medication and an appropriate level of supervision throught the detox (based on what is determined in the assessment). I find that greater success is achieved when a client is involved in their treatment plan rather than me dictating to them. I am an expert in alcohol detox, you are the expert on you.
