There was a time not all that long ago, when the words “plastic surgery” were associated primarily with celebrities and members of the wealthy elite, striving to meet their ideas of physical perfection. Today, things are a little different. In just the past few years, plastic surgeons across North America have identified a trend that comes as a shock to many. Indeed, in the past ten years the American Society of Plastic Surgeons have seen a rise of 30% in the number of children and youth going under the knife for cosmetic procedures. The reason? Bullying. Whether it be ears that “stick out too much”, an impossible-to-hide mole, or a slightly crooked nose, kids will notice it and more often than not, they will say something about it too. Such observations aren’t always made with malice, but when it comes to young people, anything that makes one feel just a little bit “different” can have very scarring effects
